‘Marylin Monroe’ by Park Chan-Girl
Koren sculptor, Park Chan-Girl, has made a range of steel sculptures depicting famous people and artworks. By slicing several layers of steel and organising them in sheets, he creates human structures which closely resemble the original.
He has sculpted his interpretation of Michelangelo’s David, The Birth of Venus, Apollo Michael Jackson, Bruce Lee, and many original works.
‘Kali’ by Selçuk Yilmaz
This Turkish artist hand-cut and hammered every piece of metal in this massive lion sculpture. Yilmaz has become a famous steel artist and has tackled several other impressive sculptures, but few shine a light on the intricate Kali project.
‘The Bowman’ by Jordi Díez Fernández
Working with steel is a much harder substance to forge into humanoid shapes compared to clay or even marble. Because of how strong the material is, it makes it almost impossible to chisel and cut. Each part needs to be carefully planned to fit together and each cut needs to be done by machine and welded on.
Jordi Díez Fernández crafts incredible, abstract yet anatomically correct statues which highlight intricate muscle groups. The sculpture that shows this attention to detail best is his Bowman project, which shows the forearm muscles’ tension while the sculpture draws on his bow.
He is a master of capturing emotion and movement despite using a hardy, hard to mould material.
‘Chicago Picasso’ by Pablo Picasso
The Chicago Picasso is likely the most famous piece on this list, as the famous Spanish painter created it. The massive sculpture cost $351,959.17 to construct, but Picasso gave it to the city of Chicago as a gift and refused payment.
Standing 15 metres tall and weighing in at nearly 147 tonnes, the towering steel sculpture became a symbol of the ‘Windy City’.
‘All Hands’ by Brian Fell
Located in Cardiff, South Wales, this welded steel sculpture stands over 2 metres tall. Fell’s work stands on the docks and is a symbol to the canal workers who pull in boats to the harbour day-in-day-out.
