At E M Steel our ‘Steel Sales’ range is ideal for those sourcing materials for a DIY metal project or a bit of home improvement. We can cut and customise your steel as necessary, making your DIY projects more hassle-free than they’ve ever been, even if you’re just a beginner! See some of our favourite DIY metal projects below:

1. Vases

First, look around for some inspiration. You might have some vases or old ceramic pots around the house whose style or proportions you’d like to emulate. When making a vase out of flat steel it’s best to pick a design that can be broken down into a series of flat shapes. You can then trace the pattern of necessary shapes onto paper which can then be used as a stencil or guide on your sheet of steel. We love the modern, industrial aesthetic that projects like these can add to a room.

2. A DIY Woodfired Pizza Oven

Fancy Italian restaurants don’t have to be the only place you can indulge in a delicious woodfired pizza, you can rustle one up in your own backyard! The best part is, if you know your way around a bit of steel, you don’t have to shell out for a state of the art pizza oven- you can make your own!

3. An Outdoor Firepit

The great thing about this project is that it’s relatively straightforward but very effective. A firepit is a great DIY project because it’s the kind of item that doesn’t need to look particularly polished or pretty anyway- you are going to be lighting a fire in it after all. For one like the firepit above you’ll simply need to cut out a series of trapezium shapes from your steel sheet as well as a square or rectangle for the base.

4. Nested Tables

This project is simple but the end result is really useful and looks amazing in a lounge area or living room. You might have an old tabletop or workbench lying around that you can cut and sand to use for the wooden top or alternatively, you could even pick up a cheap pre-loved table from an op shop. Also, this is a great chance to practice your welding skills!

5. A Welding Table

If you’re getting into a bit of metalwork and welding as a hobby, then this DIY welding table is a great project for you for two reasons: it will be great practice and will also be very useful for future projects that you work on. Welding tables are designed with flat steel sections on the tabletop, providing spaces so clamps have easy access.
